Teen superstar Selena Gomez gets back to her Texas roots when she visits the 2010 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
The Grand Prairie native and star of the Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” is the scheduled musical performer at the rodeo at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 7.
Gomez, who in a 2009 interview with Conexión said she enjoys visiting San Antonio whenever she can, will likely perform pop songs from “Kiss and Tell,” her first studio album with her band The Scene that was released last summer.
Gomez is among 20 scheduled musical performers set to take the stage at the annual rodeo that takes place Thursday, Feb. 4, through Sunday, Feb. 21, at the AT&T Center.
Other scheduled rodeo performers include: recent Grammy winners Lady Antebellum on Friday, Feb. 5; Tim McGraw on Saturday, Feb. 6; Alan Jackson on Feb. 16; and Gary Allan on Feb. 19.
The rodeo’s only other Latino music act is Pesado, scheduled to perform at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 14. The Latin Grammy-winning norteño group replaces norteño performer Ramon Ayala, who bowed out of his scheduled rodeo show because he could not guarantee his attendance, according to rodeo officials.
Ayala, who performed a show at El Fuerte in San Antonio on Jan. 30, had been keeping a low profile in recent weeks. On Dec. 11, the Grammy-winning accordionist was taken into custody by Mexican authorities who raided the home of a reputed drug lord near Mexico City. Ayala and his band, who have denied any wrongdoing, were performing at a holiday party there.
Pesado’s latest album, “Sólo Contigo,” recently earned gold status in Mexico and in the United States. The album, which contains the group’s first hit single “Ojala,” won a 2009 Latin Grammy for best norteño album.
Individual tickets for the rodeo musical performances can be purchased online at sarodeo.com, ticketmaster.com, at the AT&T Center box office, or by calling (877) 63-RODEO.
Most of the money raised from the rodeo, including its musical performances, carnival and exhibitions, goes to scholarships, grants and other youth educational programs. More than $96 million has gone toward such programs since 1984, according to rodeo officials.
